Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: National/Federal Level

The three national organizations that apple to me and I will like to share with the class are:

The National Equity Project

The National Equity Project is a leadership and systems change organization Established in1995 and committed to increasing people's capacity to achieve thriving, self-determining, educated, and just communities.

Her mission is to transform the experiences, outcomes, and life options for children and families who have been historically underserved by our institutions and systems align with my mission.

The National Equity Project believes that every child has the right to quality education. It strives to build culture, conditions, and competencies for excellence and equity in districts, schools, classrooms, nonprofits, and communities. It partners with different sectors, including schools, districts, foundations, government agencies, and other nonprofit organizations to effect change.

NEP as an opening for an Associate, Center for Equity Leadership position. The role will allow me to create learning spaces and deliver Center for Equity Leadership professional development content that helps attendees achieve the intended learning outcomes and experiences.

I will also have the opportunity to participate in and contribute to NEP's organizational wellness, learning, and professional development structures and activities. I will have the privilege to collaborate and learn with a diverse team located in different parts of the country.

This role is a perfect fit form as I check all the requirements for the following reasons.

  • I have 3-5 years of experience and practiced process and facilitation skills for equity.
  • I have a proven ability to effectively work and collaborate across differences, including race, gender, and culture, and a willingness to engage in honest conversations about challenging topics such as racism and systemic oppression.
  • I have a demonstrated commitment to individual development and learning.
  • I have experience creating highly engaging and accessible content and materials that support learning.

Center Racial Equity in Education

The mission of Racial Equity in Education (CREED) is to close opportunity gaps for all children in P-20 education, especially children of color, with the vision that one day race will no longer be a predictor of educational outcomes. It does this through research, coalition building, and technical assistance.

I choose this organization for what it stands for.

It partners with the Public School Forum of North Carolina, the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity at Duke University, and the Center for Child and Family Policy at Duke University's Sanford School of Public Policy. The partnership seeks to build bridges across the fields of research, policy, and practice and bring together the knowledge and perspectives of communities, educators, policymakers, experts, and other key stakeholders focused on achieving racial equity and dismantling systemic racism in education across the state of North Carolina and beyond.

Though there are no vacancies currently, my desired job is the Special Assistant in the Office of Equity Affairs. This position requires a bachelor's degree. As Special Assistant, I will be able to build district-wide support systems for teachers focused on culturally sustaining instructional practices that disrupt inequities and transform school systems. This position also provides an opportunity to develop a tool for identifying Bias and consults on project development.

Lastly, The American Institutes for Research

The American Institutes for Research (AIR) is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization that conducts behavioral and social science research and delivers technical assistance to solve some of the most urgent challenges in the U.S. and around the world.

AIR's mission is to generate and use rigorous evidence that contributes to a better, more equitable world. Its mission is more than just a statement. It is the foundation of the organization.

AIR's work covers a broad range of equity issues in education through initiatives including the Equity Project, the Breakthroughs in Education and Social Mobility Research Speaker Series, and the Center for Education Equity (CEE) at the Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium (MAEC), one of four regional equity assistance centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Led by MAEC in partnership with AIR and WestEd, CEE promotes equal educational opportunities and addresses problems in public schools caused by segregation and inequities.

Since its founding in 1946, AIR has conducted rigorous research and used evidence to address complex social issues and improve people's lives, both in the U.S. and across the globe.

AIR's expertise reaches beyond the shores of the United States, helping clients address educational issues and challenges at the local, state, national, and international levels by applying evidence-based practices in academic and community settings.

The job desired with this organization is Program Manager, AIR Equity Initiative. I am perfectly fit for this job. I am perfectly fit for this job. I am perfectly fit for this job with my degrees (I have a double Associate degree in Early Childhood Development and Child Development, BSc in Human Development, and MSc) and many years of experience.

In this position, I will be working on the AIR Equity Initiative to fund projects that advance AIR's mission- working with AIR leadership to implement strategic efforts that connect research, policy, and practice to create a more equitable world. In addition, I will have the opportunity to coordinate the Equity in Education Policy Implementation program, which will support the equitable implementation of policy for historically marginalized groups.

  1. I love the dedication and concentration that you have put on finding organizations that strive to influence equity and fairness within school programs.
I have actually looked into the National Equity Project before and truly believe in a lot if their missions. They believe that through radical leadership, lending an open ear to hearing people's stories and experiences, and then taking concrete steps towards change, dramatic differences are going to occur within the educational sphere.
I love organizations and places that sponsor and teach people how to be leaders. It is through leadership that advocacy can continue to grow, and then those leaders can teach others to be leaders as well. It creates systems taht are self-supported and liberated, and create nationwide networks that are all there to support and believe in each other.
    Thanks for sharing!

  2. Hi Lucy,
Thank you for sharing these wonderful organizations and I can see the intention to find national organizations that will support your capstone challenge. All three sound like wonderful additions to your community of practice. I think with the AIR’s support and connections to the Department of Education can really help in funding the initiatives you hope to put in place to tackle the tough topic of inequity in our educational system. It is so inspiring to see the passion you have and I can tell you are going to make a huge impact in the field!
    Thanks again!
    Best,
    Rebecca Mayfield

  3. I enjoyed reading your blog post and you have some interesting choices. I am curious to know if you applied for the Program Manager, AIR Equity Initiative position? It sounds like it would a great opportunity to pursue. Is this position in your area or would you have to move? That is one thing that holds me back, is applying for positions that are not in the area.

  4. Lucy, thank you for shining light on these organizations. I enjoyed exploring them. I respect the mission of Center for Racial Equity in Education (CREED). It is so important to close the opportunity gap for all children. Children are at a disadvantage when they live in poverty, lack stable housing or adequate healthcare, experience food insecurity, are exposed to adverse childhood experiences, have limited English proficiency, or is an undocumented immigrant. I see this at my school where there is a large population of low-income/poverty and immigrants.

Did you apply for any of the jobs that interested you?

  5. Lucy, you and I must be doing a similar Capstone Project because I, too, researched the National Equity Project, and really loved their vision of how to support leaders in building equity in their programs. The position they currently have available is one that suits my skill set and that I would love to do, but I do not have 3-5 years of facilitating equity-focused learning experiences yet. I had not heard of Center Racial Equity in Education, but I was excited to hear about this organization because I am doing my Capstone Project on anti-bias, anti-racist pedagogy in the early childhood classroom. I will check them out!
It sounds like you would be excited about the position at the American Institutes for Research. I could see you thriving in a position like this!
Thanks as always for your insightful posts, Lucy!
