Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: Internationally

Thinking about this week's blog discussion, three reputable international Organizations readily come to mind. One of such organizations is the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Therefore, I choose UNICEF as one of my communities of practice because of its humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide.

UNICEF works with the United Nations and its agencies to ensure that children are on the global agenda. UNICEF strikes a balance between thorough research and practical solutions for children. UNICEF works in the world's most challenging places to reach the most disadvantaged children and adolescents. It strives to protect the rights of every child, everywhere. In more than 190 countries and territories, UNICEF work with local authorities to help the most vulnerable children survive, thrive and fulfill their potential from early childhood through adolescence.

UNICEF is the world's largest provider of vaccines, supporting child health and nutrition, safe water and sanitation, quality education and skill-building, protection of children, and much more. UNICEF is on the ground during humanitarian emergencies, bringing lifesaving help and hope to children and families. It would be an honor to work with such an organization whose core mission is to help children reach their full potential worldwide.

Though there is no current opening for the position desired as an Early childhood Development Officer,  the position provides opportunities to support governments to scale up evidence-based programs for young children and families in health and nutrition, poverty, violence, and emergency contexts, to provide a fair start to every child's life.  The position requires an advanced university degree in public health, nutrition, child development, or another relevant technical field. Proficiency in English is a, and any other language is a must. I have the education and the experience suited for these jobs.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is the second international organization of interest. It is a specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes world peace and security through international cooperation in education, arts, sciences, and culture.

My reason for choosing UNESCO is its contribution to building a culture of peace, eradicating poverty, sustainable development, and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication, and information. Children cannot reach their full potential when there is war and poverty.

Education is at the heart of UNESCO's mission to build peace, eradicate poverty and drive sustainable development. The organization covers all aspects of education, provides global and regional leadership in education, strengthens education systems worldwide, and brings together governments, the private sector, and civil society to deliver quality education for all. UNESCO publishes landmark reports and data for policymakers. UNESCO has a robust program in place from teacher training to emergency responses and establishes norms and standards for all to guide educational development from preschool to higher education and beyond.

UNESCO has a job opening for a National Professional Officer (Education). The application deadline for this position is 25Jun, 2022. The position requires that the incumbent provide technical and policy advice to the Ministry of Education and relevant partners to support the identification, design, implementation, reporting, monitoring, evaluation, and coordination of activities and projects carried out under the UNESCO Education Program. In addition, the incumbent will be expected to coordinate a team of personnel in their respective fields of education and bring a strong background and capability in policy development and planning. The incumbent will also be responsible for ensuring UNESCO's contribution to the field of education.

The required qualification for this position is a Master's or equivalent in education, social sciences, or another related field. A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Work experience includes a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience in the field of education, including the planning, implementation, and monitoring of education programs at the national level, and proven experience in program management, advocacy, resources, and partnership mobilization.

Like the UNICEF job, my education and years of experience working at various levels of education have prepared me for this job.

The final organization I am interested in is the UN Women because of its dedication to gender equality and women's empowerment. UN Women is a global champion for women and girls, helping to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide.

I believe gender equality is not only a basic human right, but its achievement has enormous socio-economic ramifications. When women are Empowered, it fuels thriving economies, spurring productivity and growth. Yet gender inequalities remain deeply entrenched in every society. Women lack access to decent work and face occupational segregation and gender wage gaps. They are too often denied access to basic education and health care. Women in all parts of the world suffer violence and discrimination. They are under-represented in political and economic decision-making processes.

UN Women supports the UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality. Un Women works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programs, and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and benefit women and girls worldwide. It works globally to make the vision of the UN Women also coordinates and promotes the UN system's work in advancing gender equality and in all deliberations and agreements linked to the 2030 Agenda. In addition, the entity works to position gender equality as fundamental to the Sustainable Development Goals and a more inclusive world.

I would love to work as a field officer in Nigeria for UN Women. I will be able to work partner with youth, men, and women to strengthen their active participation and leadership in the country's development and accelerate the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women. In this position,  working with young people include adopting and implementing global and national norms and standards that guarantee the rights of young people and partnering with them to undertake programs and initiatives in various areas of gender equality and women's empowerment.

The educational requirement for this job is a University degree in Education or Social Science and two years of experience in social work.

I think I am well prepared for this job and advocate for families.

  1. You chose 3 wonderful organizations. It is interesting to read about what these organizations have to offer. I don’t think I would be able to work to far from my family. Do you plan on applying for this job after completing your Masters?

  2. UNICEF has been around since I was a child. I remember seeing their commercials asking for donations when I would watch T.V. with my parents and would always ask them what did UNICEF stand for. I am glad to know that this organization is still established but its unfortunate that the need for UNICEF is still needed.

  3. You chose some great organizations! I can remember being younger and helping raise money for UNICEF we would get a little box and add change to during lent for church and then turn it in. My parents were very big on us helping and we were always so excited to help.

  4. I chose some of the same organizations, but still found your post so informative. You make really powerful points about gender equality (or lack thereof). This is definitely a topic that deserves advocacy and support. I was honestly unaware that an organization focused on that topic existed so thank you for sharing.
