Quotes from Great Early Childhood Contributors

The quotes from Piaget and President Johnson I talked about in my discussion:

“The principle goal of education in the schools should be creating men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done; men and women who are creative, inventive and discoverers, who can be critical and verify, and not accept, everything they are offered.”
― Jean Piaget

“Children should be able to do their own experimenting and their own research. Teachers, of course, can guide them by providing appropriate materials, but the essential thing is that in order for a child to understand something, he must construct it himself, he must re-invent it. Every time we teach a child something, we keep him from inventing it himself. On the other hand, that which we allow him to discover by himself will remain with him visibly for the rest of his life.”
― Jean Piaget: Play and Development:

Education is not a problem. Education is an opportunity.
Lyndon B. Johnson

“Poverty must not be a bar to learning, and learning must offer an escape from poverty.”
Lyndon B. Johnson

Quotes about passion, motivation, and wisdom from the professionals in the media segment I cherished:
“I always wanted to be a teacher because of the built-in passion to make a real contribution to the world.”
-Louise Derman-Spark, Professor Emeritus. Pacific Oak College, CA

“I see early childhood education, see all education, really as a civic right issue.”
-Renatta M. Cooper, Program Specialist, Office of Childcare

  1. Hello Lucy,

I enjoyed reading your quotes. I would have to say I agree with the quote referencing the children doing the research on their own. I believe that one learns more when they are hands on rather than told. Education is key to success and will definitely provide an opportunity of doors opening to places you wouldn't have ever imagined.

    Thank you,

    Nicole
