Podcast-Understanding and Navigating the Parent-Teacher Relationship.

Part 1, Expanding Horizons

Podcast-Understanding and Navigating the Parent-Teacher Relationship.

The Preschool Podcast under discussion centers on the parent-teacher relationship. Dr. Erin O'Connor delivered the talk in this episode arranged by Hi mama. Dr. Connor is a developmental psychologist and the director of NYU's Early Childhood Education program. She is also the co-founder of Scientific Mommy, a research-based website for families and educators to learn more about parenting and child development.

Dr. O'Connor dives into parent and educator relationships and explains that these relationships are essential across the developmental spectrum. She states that parents who have positive relationships with their children's teacher in early childhood regularly report having a positive relationship later in life when their child is in high school and beyond.

According to Dr. O'Connor

"Beginning in childhood, a positive relationship is really based on trust and communication."

Through open and honest communication, parents and educators develop positive relationships that lead to more open lines of communication. When educators are comfortable with their parents, it leads to positive interactions. They can share the details of what is going on in their classroom and any concerns about their children.

Dr. O'Connor states that having consistent relationships and clear expectations between families and educators eliminates any miscommunication. She counsels that parents should also be mindful of their verbal and non-verbal communication when talking to their child's teacher in the presence of their children, or it might signal to the child that the school environment that they're is not safe for them.

Families who are new to the child care sector can ask their child's teacher the best way to contact them. This will help set the stage for better communication.

Part 2, Expanding Resources

National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER)

The website I have chosen for this class is NIEER. I chose this website because its vision aligns with my vision for all children, irrespective of color or creed. It "envisions a society that ensures a successful future for all children." It also has an appealing mission. NIEER's mission is to improve the "learning and development of young children by producing and communicating knowledge that transforms policy and practice." It collaborates with a "network of local, state, national, and international leaders to design, conduct, and disseminate rigorous research, evaluation, and policy analysis." More importantly, NIEER, through its conduct and dissemination of research, creates a platform for the next generation of leaders and researchers in early education. To this end, NIEER has been providing independent, research-based analysis and technical assistance to inform policy supporting high-quality early education for all young children.

NIEER is committed to presenting nonpartisan research gear toward improving the early childhood education field and the promotion of policies and practices that promote physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development in children that are fundamental to their success in school and life. For these reasons, it is my choice of a vital resource for this class and beyond.

  1. Hi Lucy,

I came across this podcast when I was doing my research this week. I never listened to a podcast until this assignment. I found it to be very informative. Parent-Educator relationships are so important to the children. I will definitely review the National Institute for Early Education Research organization. I'm interested to read more about the organization and learn their mission and goals.
