Exploring Roles in the ECE Community: Local and State Levels

Talking about communities of practice, the organizations that I readily identify with are:

TEXProtect, a "champion for safe children." TexProtects was created in 2004 to tackle issues of CPS reform, prevention, and public awareness to bring a collective, organized voice representing the needs of children at risk of abuse and survivors of child abuse and neglect. The organization is autonomous and nonpartisan, designed to educate decision-makers, private funders, and the public. It is the only Texas organization with a dedicated focus on the issues of protection, prevention, and healing of abused and neglected children. It empowers families to thrive through education, research, and advocacy.

Texprotect programs for children and families are evidence-based prevention programs driven by comprehensive research. Through its research, Texprotect can make policy recommendations.

Its research results are applied to statewide advocacy efforts to help create systemic change through public policy innovations in the CPS (Child Protective Service) system and secure private and public funds for child abuse prevention programs and services for abused children. In addition, the organization leads three collaborations of experts and advocates in developing a consensus public policy agenda.

TexProtects has more than ten thousand advocates statewide that we educate on child abuse and neglect prevention, the consequences of maltreatment, and how to advocate for their stakeholders. Child advocates are informed through emails and advocacy alerts to educate them on emerging research and bring attention to issues or legislation affecting the protection of children. In addition, members are given educational opportunities through presentations, webinars, and other platforms.

Another community of practice I have benefited from immensely over the years is "Children 4Tommorrow." Its mission is to create a professional collaborative atmosphere of community awareness and nurturing support for children to thrive and grow in a mentally and emotionally healthy environment. In addition, professionals are given hands-on training that will help them make a difference.

The organization works with various professional bodies to help the communities around texas with knowledge and understanding of the effects of childhood trauma and emotional and psychological abuse. And to educate the mental health and legal community through specialized training and resources. Through its multi-faceted programs, Children4Tommorrow promotes the parent/child relationship and diminishes childhood trauma.

Lastly, "Texans Care for Children" is one of my go-to communities of practice as its vision espouses mine. Texans Care for Children envisions a Texas in which all children grow up to be healthy, safe, successful, and on a path to fulfilling their promises.

It is a statewide, non-profit, nonpartisan, multi-issue children's policy organization. It develops policy solutions, produces research, and engages Texas community leaders to educate policymakers, the media, and the public about what works to improve the well-being of Texas children and families.

I would love to work for Children4 Tomorrow as a Family Outreach Coordinator. My job will be to restore families to become mentally and emotionally healthy and stop childhood trauma and psychological abuse through awareness and education.

For TexProtect, the job of an Early Childhood Interventionist perfectly suits my profile. In this position, I will be able to help Pre-K students with a learning disability receive early intervention to build a stronger foundation to enter into public school or alternate education settings with tremendous success.

Finally, a Policy Associate for Early Childhood for Texans Care for Children fits my profile. In this position, I would be able to play a

an important role in advocating for full-day funding in the state's school finance package, talking to legislators on legislation to improve nutrition and active play in child care, and child care safety and child-teacher ratios.

With my skills and the number of years I have spent in the field of early childhood education, I should be able to handle these positions effectively. I have over twenty-five years of experience working with children. Over the years, I have worked with diverse children and families, giving me the rear opportunities to understand the complexity of human development. Furthermore, with the knowledge acquired from Walden, I should think I am well prepared for these jobs.

  1. The first organization you chose is so valuable. I live in Michigan and do not believe something like that exists here. That is an excellent example of an organization that could make actual, long lasting change to protect and support all children. Great post!
